NEWARK TECH
WORLD HISTORY
WAS THERE ANY OBSTACLES IN YOUR LIFE AND OVERCOME THEM?
FIRST OF ALL WHEN I WAS 11 YEARS OLD I WAS IN THE EAGLE ROCKS BOWLING ALLEY CHAMPIONSHIP.I WAS DETERMINED FOR IT, BUT I HEARD SOME PEOPLE SAID I WAS SKINNY AND COULDN'T PICK UP A BOWLING BALL.AS IT WAS MY TURN TO BOWL AND MADE MY STRIKE, I KNEW THEY WAS SHOCKED.I WON 2ND PLACE THAT DAY, BUT I FELT PROUD OF MYSELF AS I SEEN THE PEOPLES SHOCKED EXPRESSIONS.
WHEN I WAS BACK IN MY OLD SCHOOL, I WAS THINKING THAT I WANTED TO ATTEND NEWARK TECH BECAUSE OF THE EXCELLENCE TEACHERS AND I THOUGHT WITH THEIR HELP I COULD GO FAR, BUT SOME KIDS IN MY CLASS SAID BECAUSE OF MY MATH SCORES I WOULDN'T GET ACCEPTED.A WEEK LATER I TOOK THE TEST WITH NO PROBLEMS, AND FINALLY A MONTH LATER I GOT A LETTER IN THE MAIL AN ACCEPTANCE FROM NEWARK.
THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE LAST ONE, WHEN I WAS JUST IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, I DIDN'T AND NEVER LIKED SPELLING TEST.THE LAST SPELLING TEST WAS GOING TO COUNT AS 50% OF MY GRADE POINT AVERAGE FOR THE CYCLE.MY TEACHER TOLD ME TO GIVE UP AND ACCEPT THE B+.IN MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS TO ACCEPT THE B+, BUT NO ONE TELLS ME TO GIVE UP, SO I PREPARED MYSELF FOR IT AND THE NEXT DAY WHEN I TOOK THAT TEST I KNEW I WAS GOING TO A'S IT.AFTER THE TEST THE TEACHER WAS PASSING THEM OUT AND SHE FINALLY GAVE ME MINES I GOT BIG A+ WITH A STICKER ON IT.
BACK WHEN I WAS 9, I LOVED TO GO TO THE PARK AND PLAY BASKETBALL AND HAVE FUN.I WAS NEW TO COLUBIA PARK SO EVERYBODY THOUGHT THAT I CAN'T PLAY, SO THIS TALL GUY STEPPED UP TO ME AND STARTED SAYING THAT I'M TOO SHORT AND CAN'T PLAY OR SHOOT.AS I GOT THE BALL AND SHOOT THE 3 HE WAS ASTONISHED.A COUPLE OF MINUTES LATER I WON 15-3, I NEVER SEEN HIM AGAIN FROM THAT DAY AND I HOPE I NEVER WILL.
IN 6TH GRADE WE USUALLY HAVE FOOTBALL GAMES WITH THE 5TH GRADERS, I NEVER GOT THE BALL BECAUSE ALL THE KIDS WAS ON THE BALL BECAUSE ALL THE KIDS WAS ON A TEAM LIKE THE JAGUARS OR THE RAMS.SO AFTER THE FIRST DOWN THEY SAID I DONT KNOW HOW TO RUN OR CATCH I DEMANDED THEM TO GIVE ME THE BALL SO THE AGREED.NOBODY WAS AFTER ME SO I KNEW I WAS GOING FOR THE TOUCHDOWN.THEY GAVE ME THE BALL AND I WAS RUNNING FOR MY LIFEAND RAN A TOUCHDOWN.I FELT UNSTOPPABLE THAT DAY.
THIS IS KIND OF WEIRD, ME AND MY FRIENDS ALWAYS RACE EACH OTHERTO SEE WHICH ONE IS THE FASTEST.I USUALLY LOSE BUT THEY SAID I WILL NEVER BEAT THEM I WAS MAD AND I WANTED TO PROVE THEM WRONG.I PRACTICED IN THE BACK OF MY HOUSE AND FINALLY I WAS READY.2 WEEKS LATER I WAS DETERMINEDAND AS THEY SAID GO I THINK FLAMES WAS ON MY FEET.I KNEW I WAS AHEAD OF THEM AND I FINALLY BEAT THEM.
IN MY CONCLUSION DONT LET OBSTACLES BE IN FRONT OF YOUR PATH TO SUCCESS OR YOUR DREAMS.YOU NEED OBSTACLES IN ORDER TO BETTER YOURSELF.I HAD OBSTACLES AS I STARTED PRE-K AND KNOW I'M IN THE 9TH GRADE.I'VE MADE IT THIS FAR AND IM NOT GOING TO STOP KNOW AND I WILL NEVER STP UNTIL I REACH MY GOAL.

The "Gatekeepers" in my Life
There have been many people in my life who are the "gatekeepers". They would try and stop me from getting to my goal. In my 8th grade basketball team there were a group of girls who were skeptical about me playing. Then there was that time when I wanted to try and play an instrument. Also when I told my best friend I was going to acting classes, she doubted my abilities. Even my own cousin told me I couldn’t do it. It disappointed me that so many people that I thought would be there to support me, weren’t.
Well last year I decided to join the basketball team. That would have been my second year playing if I hadn’t sprained my ankle. But in the team there were 4 girls that just because that was there second year, they assumed they were the best players in the team. So during practice, if a misunderstood a play or if I didn’t score they would suck their teeth. I felt so much negativity around me that I was really close to quitting. My coach convinced me to stay.
I had been playing the violin since the 5th grade. But the beginning was tough. My violin teacher was real helpful and patient. As to my other classmates, they weren’t so supportive. One of my friends was already in the orchestra when I joined. She would sometimes tell me “This is too hard for you. You won’t last. Its better if you just quit.” Then my teacher told me she was just mad that I learned to read musical notes faster than her, that’s why she would make me feel bad. I got so good at violin; I even got a chance to play in a concert with cellist Akua Dixon!
During 8th grade, I would go every Saturday to New York for classes. I was real excited. I went and told my so called “best friend” and she told me was totally unexpected. She said “I don’t see you as an actress. Try something else.” She failed to me as a friend. As a result I didn’t talk to her. I set myself to do my best in those classes to make her take back her words!
The day before spring break starts, we always get homework. Well I remember once my class got an assignment to sculpt a human with clay. So on the weekend I went over to my cousin’s house. I asked her if she could pose for me while I molded her shape into the clay. She laughed and said “You can’t even draw. How do you think you can mold me into clay?” I got mad at her, left and my sister posed for me. I told her what had happened with our cousin and she told me to ignore her and to do my best.
As you can see there have been many “gatekeepers” in my life. They’ve made me feel as if I am not good enough to do something. But they just helped me. They motivated me to prove them wrong. I didn’t quit anything I was told I couldn’t do. I am proud of myself!
There are many “gatekeepers” out there. These people later on became my motivation. I am not a quitter. I learned that if you really want something and work hard for it, you won’t let anybody stop you from getting to where you want to be. Don't let anyone tell you, you can't make it!

The Fourth Grade Teacher/GateKeeper
There is not much that I let get to me. I'm usally calm and collected through rough times. Even when people try to put me down, I stay very level headed. School should be a place where you feel safe and secure at all times. In my case I didn't always feel comfortable in school and the worst part about it was my teachers made me feel this way.
In my fourth grade year everything suddenly change. I was really happy at first, due to my love for school. Until that day my teacher decided to put me on the spot. She asked me a question and I answered it. Mrs.Rodenberg did not like my answer so she made a smart remark. Upset at the reamark I sat queitly for the rest of the day.
The next day I went into class and sat in my seat. I waited for the class to began. I was expecting it to be different but I was wrong. My teacher called on me again, I answered the question. Once again she made mean remarks towards me, I was feeling even more embarassed this time. This went on for months. I started not to like school there is only but so much criticism that a person can take.
My parents notices a change in my behavior. I became withdrawn. I wasn't thrilled about school anymore. They asked me the common question 'how was my day.' I would tell them I was fine. Until one day I couldn't take it anymore. I told my mom everything from begining to end. My mom became concerned about my well being. She called and requested a parent teacher conference.
My parents went to the school to talk to my teacher, only to walk in the class and find my present teachers at the time talking to my teacher from the previous year.she let them noe she never any problem when I was in her class I was a good student always. Ms Paul also then told them that my parents were envolved in my education.
When my parent's began to talk to my teacher they found out that one of my teachers felt that I couldn't take constructive criticism. Mrs.Rodenberg told my parents they where only trying to help me thats why they criticized me everday. They also told my parents that i didnt do homework often. My mom told her that she was telling the truth because she was helping me with my homework. After the meeting my parents made a complaint to the priincipal about the teachers. She said she would look into it and get back to them on it.
To make a long story short. It was time to get my report card. My teacher gave me C and D. I was so sad because I never less then A in all my class. My mom told me in life people are just not going to like me. So I had to make the best of the situation. I decide to work harder to improve my grades, but they stayed the same the entire year. The day came when I had to take the NJASK4 I had one of the highest scores in the whole fourth grade. My teachers didn't know what to do. If I had let them break my spirit I would not have done well on this test. They tried to be a gatekeeper but I showed them the true power that was inside of me.
