In the book.People of Umoufia were really serious in there religion.Like the men were even turned off when the Missionaries came to talk of their gods as wood and stone. But there people that was not so serious in there religion. So I think the Missionaries were able to shock the life of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women.

In the story it says "how can the white man understand our customs when he doesn't even speak our tonque"?So it was like the people was kind of confused.Only because here this man comes out of no where and begins to talk about his God.Then tell them there gods are fake. And are harmless.

The people lives get shocked when they find out that the people that have changed to christanity have also said there evil ways and gods are bad.So now the men and women are actually starting to think about what has been said by the missionaries. But for some of them it was hard to still let go of there gods. But Mr. Brown was determined to keep preaching about his God.

For Example,in chapter twenty-one it says how was very firm with the flock he had already. But then he had a visit from a man named Akunna. In the story he said "you say there is one supreme God who has made heaven and earth.WE also believe in Him and call Him Chukwu'.Akunna still was believing in his evil gods but soon came to realize what the white man was say is true.

The white man said in response "You carve a piece of wood like that one over there. But it is nothing but a piece of wood.So the people were being shocked because whatever they said about there gods. The white man had a more powerful response. And i think thats what cause the people tho think about what religion they wanted to be in.

Another reason why the lives of the men and women were shocked is because Mr. Brown actually built schools and hospitals for them. They could send there children to read and write.bBut not only that the adults could go and learn as well.In the book it says "people that was thirty years and older were going to learn. They would work on their farms in the morning and go to school in the afternoon".

So in my conclusion I say the missionaries shocked the life of Igbo men and women because they did so much for the people.Just so they could come to The supreme God and have enteranl life. The missionaries built schools and hospital for them.So the men and women were like they do all of this just to qet us to live a qood life.So at the end of the day they were shock.

The missionaries were able to shock the life of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women by their arrival to speak to them about their gods(the gods they think is better than the Igbo gods).

The change of life of the Igbo people was that he didn't want to change their Christianity for no reason. If the Igbo people went into a new religion they fear that their neglected gods wil punish them.

When the Igbo people came they were shocked to see a white man with missionaries. They thought that white men rode on iron horses and do other things that rich and different people do.

The Igbo people are more worthy than the missionaries because they dont try to change anybodies belief in life or anything else. They respect their gods and I guess they respect them.

The missionaries are suppose to help the Igbo people of their religious belief not try to change it.If you try to change a man he wouldn't be himself anymore.

I'm not the type of person to judge someone else just because they are not the same as me.The missionaries must not be thinking straight. They got to think before saying anything or at least think of what the other people might react.

In conclusion that's how the missionaries shocked the life style of the Igbo men and women, by telling them to switch religion so they will live happy and more peaceful.

How and why the missionaries were able to shock the lifestyle of traditional non-confirming Igbo men and women. Is they changed their Christianity and what they believed in. The missionaries told the men and women of Umuofia that the gods he named to the missionaries were all gods of deceit who tell you to kill your fellows and destroy innocent children. Also they said that the gods they believe in are inaccurate. Basically how and why they were able to shock the lifestyle of the traditional non-confirming Igbo men and women is by telling them that the gods they believe in were false and should change what they believe in.

Also why the missionaries were able to shock the men and women of Umuofia. Is they compared the gods that people in Umuofia believed in to pieces of wood and stone. They disrespected them in a way that was almost cruel in my opinion. I think that was really rude when they sang the song about the brothers who lived in darkness and in fear, ignorant of the love of god. When they sang that song that really made it seem to the people of Umuofia that the missionaries were stomping on them.

They also shocked the people of Umuofia is by saying that the gods that they believe in is not alive. Also they cannot do any harm the white man replied. “True gods lived on high and that all men when they died went before him for judgment” What that quote means that the god you believe in. That when you die you will go to the god that you believe.

Another reason why the missionaries were able to shock the lifestyle of traditional non-confirming Igbo men and women. Are they made a lot of the people mad in Umuofia. Someone who they really made upset was nwoye. It was not the mad logic of the trinity that captivated him. Nwoye did not understand it, but it was the poetry of the new religion, something felt in marrow.

“For who is it well, for whom is it well? There is no one for whom it is well”. What that quote means that when you die in Umuofia nobody does not know. They do not know who the next person who is going to die. There are various numbers of occasions of how you can die in the village of Umuofia. That’s what the quote stands for.

Also how the missionaries shocked the people of Umuofia is by helping them. For example Mr. Brown he helped them in so many various ways. By building schools and hospitals for them. So basically not only the children were learning but the adults there were learning also. That’s why they were shocked, because they never really expected any help.

In conclusion why the people of Umuofia were so shocked is because they received a lot of help. Like they always say “The people who helps you the most, loves you the most”. What that quote means is that in life when someone is always helping you in life or expecting you to do better. They expect you to do something with your life, and not waste it. So that is why “I believe that life always work the way it did today for a better tomorrow”.

Shock, to strike or jar with intense surprise. In the novel Things Fall Apart the missionaries "shocked" the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women. Previously missionaries came to Umofia to try to convince the people to change their religion. When doing so they said that there was only one god, theirs. One man then asked who would protect them from the neglected gods and the man replied they were harmless.

The missionaries stayed and lingered in the marketplace for 4-5 nights. They had wanted to know who the king was, but one had explained to them there was no king. "we have men of high title and the chief, priest and elders." they told them. They wanted to talk to them to see if they could be given a piece of land to build a church. The rulers of Mbanta decided to give them a piece of land in the evil forest.

They had given them land in the evil forest because they expected them to be dead in the next four days. They didn't trust them and didn't want them in their clan. The days went past four and they were all alive. It was said they were confused at first. Then they began to believe that "the white man's fetish had unbelievable power."

They began to foresee when they would truly die. It was set for the seventeenth week. But they were still breathing. So well, that they began to build a house for their teacher. And in that time they kept gaining more converts. Though we all know that Nwoye has been attracted to the change, Okonkwo is not happy about it at all.

Then Amikwu snitched on Nwoye because he saw him among the Christians. He had said he was surprised to see him there because like Okonkwo, he was on the other side of the fence. Okonkwo was furious. After his physical confrontation with him all he could think about was how his son had abandoned their ancestors. He wanted to believe that it wasn’t his offspring but genetic traits proved otherwise.

However, back at the church Mr.Kiaga was teaching young Christians to read and write. And Nwoye went to Mr.Kiaga after his clash with his father. Nwoye enjoys being around him a lot. He had said “He would return later to his mother and his brothers and sisters to convert them to the new faith.” Exactly what would really get under Okonkwo’s s skin.

The missionaries were able to shock the people of Umofia by doing what they all least expected they’d do. They survived in the Evil Forest over seventeen weeks. Then they keep converting more and more people as the days go by. And they are successfully teaching the young to read and write. They are slowly changing the aspect of how the live.

The missionaries were able to shock the life style of all traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women. Not only with all their beliefs but with the actions they took in order to make the Igbo men and women believe in them as well. The missionaries caused chaos and put the Igbo men and women against each other. Many men and women who converted into Christians were considered outsiders and people who couldn’t get titles. The missionaries not only shocked the Igbo men but, changed their lives .

The missionaries wanted the Igbo men and women t change their ways. They thought that the Igbo’s beliefs were for heathens and that their gods were only pieces of wood and stone. They thought that the only god that existed was their almighty god. The Igbo men and women were afraid of turning or converting into Christians because they were afraid of their gods wrath. the missionaries told them that they couldn’t harm them because they were after all pieces of wood and stone.

At first the Igbo men and women didn’t trust the missionaries but, they went on trying to convince them anyways. The missionaries wanted their own piece of land where they could build a church. The leaders of the Igbo men and women gave them the land in the evil forest where they buried the people that had evil diseases. The Igbo men and women predicted that the missionaries weren’t going to last for four days but, they did. This caused many Igbo men and women to believe in the missionaries and convert to Christianity.

People were ok with the missionaries as long as they didn’t overstep their bounds. but, one day three converts went into the village and said that the Igbo’s gods were dead and they were going to defy them. This enraged the village people and they beat the men until blood streamed. The missionaries along with their beliefs brought their own government which enraged the Igbo men and women.

The men and women in mbanta were angry and confused when the heard the sacred or royal python was killed. It was never really known if it was killed accidentally or not. But the didn’t really care Oknokwo’s was one of these men , he thought that the missionaries were pouring filth over them and that they shouldn’t pretend not to see. The Ibo men and women thought it would be a good idea to exclude
the small Christian community. The Christian women no longer were allowed at the stream or the quarry and were wiped when they made an attempt to. Okoli who had been the one rumored to have killed the python died at the end of the day and the men who had wiped the women cared no longer. His death showed that the Igbo’s gods could fight their own battles.

The missionaries also had a government and they built a court where the district commissioner judged cases. They also had court messengers which the Igbo men and women hated because they were arrogant and high handed. There was also a prison full of men who had offend the Christians beliefs and way of life. They were beaten in prison and had to work every morning clearing the government compound and fetching wood. Some of the prisoners were men of title and I think this is one of the things that shocked the Igbo men especially Okonkwo. How can the white man understand their custom about land when he doesn’t even speak their tongue.

The missionaries were able to shock the life style of all traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women. They had changed their beliefs and their way of living and their customs were of no importance to the missionaries. All those who had not converted into Christians or had not followed the white mans laws were punished for what the white men thought were acts of heathens but in reality that was their customs. The Igbo men and women couldn’t stop the white men or missionaries because their own clansmen were involved and that would mean killing their own which was not a part of their custom. I think the missionaries not only shocked the igb men and women but caused grief and turmoil for the Igbo men and women.

The missionaries were able to shock the life style of all traditional
non-conforming Igbo men and women. They were able to shock them not only with
their beliefs but also with their actions that they prsented. The missionaries
tried to change the Igbo men and women by turning them against each other. They
tried to make them turn into christians and betray their own culture and some did.
So the missionaries changed some of the Igbo men and women's lives.

The missionaries thought that the Igbo's beliefs were for heathens and
that their gods their gods were only peices of wood and stone. The missionaries
thought and told the Igbo men and women that the only god that their was was
their god which was named chuckwu. The missionaries were still determined to
turn that Igbo men and women into christians. But the Igbo men and women were
afraid to turn into christian because they were afraid of their gods. But the
    missionaries didnt give up.

People lives also get shocked when they found out that people that have
changed to christianity have also said there evil ways and gods are bad. Due
to this some of the men and women were actually starting to think about what
has been said by the missionaries. But for the rest it was still hard for
them to let go of their gods. So therefore Mr. Brown kept preaching about his god
hoping to change some of their minds.

The missionaries also shocked the people of Umoufia was by saying that
the gods that they believed in were not alive. They also said that they couldn't
do any harm. The quote from the book that reflects on this statement is
"True gods lived on high and that all men when they died went before him for
judgment". That also means that when you die you will go to the god that you
    believed in.

Another way that the missionaries shocked the Igbo men and women
is by helping them. They helped them by building schools for not only children
but also for adults. The Igbo men and women were shocked because they didnt
expect Mr. Brown which was the person who tried to make them change their
    culture would help them.

In chapter Twenty-One it says how very firm Mr. Brown was with his flock.
Then he had a visit from a man named Akunna. In the story he said "you say there is one
supreme god who has made heaven and earth".They also believed in him and called him
as you know chuckwu. Akunna was still believing his evil gods but soon came to realise
that the white man was right.

So in conclusion to all of this yes the missionaries did shock the Igbo
men and women. They shocke them by building schools for them which was byhelping
them. They also shocked them by trying to change them into christian. The last
reason why they shocked them was by disrespecting their gods. Those were all
the ways that the missionaries shocked the Igbo men and women.

A missionary is a member of a religion who works to convert thosse who do not share the same missionary faith. In the book things fall apart the missionary tries to convince umoufia to change there got to worship and praise their god. Then one man asked who would protect from the neglected gods and the missionary replied they are harmless.

So that is a reason why the missionary shocked Umoufia, the missionary told them that their god was harmless and that they wasnt alive. Also why the missionaries were able to shock the men and women of Umuofia. The missionaries spent their first four or five nigts in the market place, and went into the village in the morning to preach the gospel."They want a piece of land to build their shrine"One one occasion the missionary had tried to over step the bounds. three converts had gone into the village and boasted opently that the gods were dead and impotent and tht they were prepared to defy them by burning all their shrines.
In the story it says "how can the white man understand our customs when he doesn't even speak our tonque"? that simply mean that how can aomeone disrespaect their religion and costom when they dnt even understand it and kno why they praise wat that praise and adore.

In conclusion the missionary kept trying to convince umoufia in so many different way, they finally did succeesfully, almost over step they bounds but still stand.

The missionaries were able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women by saying that the religion they believed in was only pieces of wood and stone. The missioners are the white men that want to change the religion of people in Umoufia. Umoufia is the place where all the people who believe in Igbo or non-conforming live at. Okonkwo is also shocked by the missioners when they got Nwoye was around Christians who are non-Igbo believers. The missioners shocked everyone in Umoufia.

The missionaries schoked the people by making the men and women of Umuofia to believe in the Christian religion. The mocked their gods by telling them that they their gods are nothing but just stone and wood, and that they have no power at all. I think that’s really messed up because they are trying to mess up a community of people who believe in something and change what should be right. That really especially turned of the men of Umuofia when the missioners just came into their village and wants their village people to change their gods.

They missionaries also shocked the people of Umuofia by say that their gods have no power or is alive to do that. For example when the white men were captured by them their gods did not strike them down for trespassing into their viilage. The quote “ For is whom is it well, for who is it well? There is no one for whom it is well.” This means that there is people who trying to change some ones religion and they are not doing it well to protect it.

The missionaries were able to shock the people when they were really angry about Nwoye being around Christian people. Nwoye is Okonkwos son, the people of Umuofia were really angry to know that the son of Igbo believer would turn on their father like. Everyone would think that Okonwo could have control over his to be a Igbo believer but it didn’t turn out that way. Nowye felt very confused about the new religion he had been hearing about.

Okonkwo was angry that Mr.Kiaga the youth about Christianity, and how to read and write. Nwoye really liked Mr. Kiaga and loves to be with him. Mr. Kiaga told Nwoye to bring his mothers, brothers, and sisters to join and learn about the new religion. In opinion I would feel back stabbed by my family that they are believing in another religion without having word with the father.

The missionaries also shocked the people of Umuofia by Mr. Brown building schools and hospitals for the people. The children of Umuofia had a chance to learn how read and write besides knowing how to farm and plant Yams. The adults of Umuofia could also go to school and learn. In the story it said “that the older people of Umuofia would farm in the morning and go to school in the afternoon”.

In conclusion the men and women of Umuofia were shocked by the missionaries when they began to change their village and have done a lot of generous things for them. The missionaries just want to spread the word of god around to people and join them in enternal life. If Umuofia people cant beat them they might as well join them and learn about their gods.

People of Umoufia were really serious in there religion. Like the men were even turned off when they came in and start talking about there false and wicked god. There also were people who didn’t care. That’s how they shocked the life back in the tradional nonconforming Igbo men and women.

In the story I think it said something about “ white people cant speak our tounge and trying to judge us”. To me that means the people were mad because one day whites were injected into into Africa and they were trying to judge them how can you do that when you don’t know them.

The people also became shocked when people change religions and went with the missionaries. To me that’s means that you should have already done that. Your grown make your own decisions don’t do it because somebody told u to. Not by words by choice.

They are more better off because they are happy for anybody who makes any decision. Appose to the missionaries don’t like them because they are not with the same religion.

  15. continue:IN the story as I read on it said “ for whom is well, For whom its well, there is no one for whom is well” To me that means that you cant always look for things to go your way. You cant always want people to follow what you do. To me it also means that you half to want things for yourself not cause a human told you to do it.

To people in Umouofia that to them means that when thigs happen it is unexpected nobody doesn’t know.

IN conclusion the missionaries should stop what thay are doing. I say that cause if they see how they are hurting people they will finally know how much they care about the religion and the people who are in there religion.

The people in Umuofia need to listen to this Qoute.

“ Don’t do things cause a human told you. Do it cause its what you want”

The missionaries were able shock or to jar the Igbo men and women by trying to change they religion. In the book the people of Umoufia are very serious about they religion and tradition. Let me reminded you that they kill twins and put them The “ Evil Forest”, because there gods said that twins are evil. Also the people of Umoufia Believe so much it there gods and that’s why they give the missionaries the evil forest to build a church. Because they believe there gods was going to kill them. But when they didn’t dying, people started to change what they believe it.

The missionaries was able to shock and convert the people of Umoufia, when they didn’t dying like the gods said so they started to change people minds. But the real thing the missionaries did was when they let the outcasts in the church. That meant men without titles and farms was allowed in the church. But the clan felted like “ how can the white man understand our customs when he doesn’t even speak our tongue”. what that means is the clan is saying how can you change things when you don’t understand us.

Which the church growing and the clan going down, things was change. The missionaries really got to the young men and women of Umoufia. The oldest people of Umoufia were very set in they ways or stubborn. They did not believe in what the missionaries was saying. The Missionaries say that “ your gods are not alive and they cannot harm you, they are pieces of wood and stone”. What the white missionaries meant by that was that they gods was not real , they never have been and never will. They are trying to make it sound like there are only one god and you want to believe it him.

When the white missionary had a meeting with Akunna they what try to convert each other, they learned about the different beliefs. One time Akunna said” You say that there is one supreme God who made heaven and earth.” but the white missionary said it only one god, no other. This is a example that the white missionary who which name was Mr. Brown was trying to understand the Igbo gods. But when Mr. Brown got sick and had to leave. The new white missionary came which whom name is Mr.Kiaga was the one who to me cus4e the trouble. Because Mr. Brown was more nicer and calmer., But Mr.Kiaga is more cruel and unkind to the people of Umoufia the way I see it.

Well that how the Missionaries shocked the Igbo men and women by changing they religion and tradition, and in a way the missionaries did what they come to do convert the people of Umoufia, it’s a very sad ending of a great clan . Oh well all good things must come to a end, and on that note I’m out.

In the story it says how can the white man understand our customs when he doesn't even speak our tongue?" So it was like the people didn't know what that meant. The reason why they was confused is because an man come up to them and said that their god was fake and that his god is better than theirs.

In the story things fall apart it says "how can the white man understand our customs when he doesn't even speak our tonque"?So it was like the people was kind of confused.Only because here this man comes out of no where and begins to talk about his God.Then tell them there gods are fake. And are harmless.

In the book Things fall apart, people of Umoufia were really serious in there religion. Like the men were even turned off when the missionaries came to talk of thier gods as wood and stone. But there people that was not so serious in there religion. So i think the missionaries were able to shock the life of traditional nonconforming Igbo men and women.

For my Example,in chapter twenty-one it says how was very firm with the flock he had already. But then he had a visit from a man named Akunna. In the story he said "you say there is one supreme God who has made heaven and earth.WE also believe in Him and call Him Chukwu'.Akunna still was believing in his evil gods but soon came to realize what the white man was say is true.

In the story white man said in response "You carve a piece of wood like that one over there. But it is nothing but a piece of wood.So the people were being shocked because whatever they said about there gods. The white man had a more powerful response. And i think thats what cause the people tho think about what religion they wanted to be in.

why the lives of the men and women were shocked is because Mr. Brown actually built schools and hospitals for them. They could send there children to read and write.bBut not only that the adults could go and learn as well.In the book it says "people that was thirty years and older were going to learn. They would work on their farms in the morning and go to school in the afternoon".

I say the missionaries shocked the life of Igbo men and women because they did so much for the people.Just so they could come to The supreme God and have enteranl life. The missionaries built schools and hospital for them.So the men and women were like they do all of this just to qet us to live a qood life.So at the end of the day they were shock.

The missionaries were able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women because in the book they took their religion very seriously because even the men were turned off when the Missionaries came to talk of their gods as wood and stone.

In my opinion they had disrespected them. I say that because of when they had sang the song about the brothers who lived in darkness and in fear, ignorant of the love of god. When they had sang that song it really was rude.

If the Igbo people went into a new religion they fear that they neglected gods will punish them. Like when the Igbo people came they were shocked to see a white man with missionaries. They thought that white men rode on iron horses and do other things that rich and different people do.

The people are also shocked because of the missionaries. You can make your own decisions. Dont do anything because somebody is making you. Still at the end of the day your not doing it because of you.

In the story it said “ for whom is well, For whom its well, there is no one for whom is well” . That qoute right there probably means that not everything might go as how you want it to be. Some things will just not be how you want them to. Maybe some things is just known its going to happen. In Umoufia they take things as if its unexpected.

Another reason why the lives of the men and women were shocked was because Mr. Brown built schools and hospitals for them. They could send there children to read and write. Not only that the adults could go and learn as well.In the book it says "people that was thirty years and older were going to learn. They would work on their farms in the morning and go to school in the afternoon.

    In conclusion, the missionaries shouldnt
do what they are doing because it really isnt right. I dont think that they would like it if someone was doing those things to them.

How and why were the missionaries able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women?. The Missionaries were able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and woman. By telling them that the god they worship is nothing but wood and stone. Also they said that there god was harmless to them. Furthermore they started talking about how their God was much more powerful than their false God.

In the story it states that "how can the white man understand our customs when he doesn't even speak our tongue?". Everybody in the village was very confused. Since a man comes to them and says that their god is fake. And that his God is the real God and not a fasle idol. These words that the white man had uttered had everyone confused.

Another reason the missionaries were able to shock the life style. Is when they find out that the people from the village have changed their religion to christanity. They have agreed with Mr. Brown and also said there evil ways and gods are bad. So now the men and women are actually starting to beleive everything that was being said by the missionaries. But for some of them it was hard to still let go of there gods. But Mr. Brown was dedicated to make evryone of them follow his God.

To prove my statement in the last paragraph. In the story it states how he was very firm with the flock he had already. But then he had a visit from a man named Akunna. In the story he said "you say there is one supreme God who has made heaven and earth. We also believe in Him and call Him Chukwu". Akunna was still believing in his evil gods but soon came to realize what the white man was say is very accurate.

Furthermore in the story the white man said in response "You carve a piece of wood like that one over there. But it is nothing but a piece of wood. So the people were being shocked because anything he said about there gods. The white man had a more response to give. Because of this it changed some peoples mind of what religion they wanted to join.

Moreover in the story Mr.Brown had built schools and hospitals for them. So they could send there children to read and write. But there was more the elders could go and learn as well. In the story it states "People that was thirty years and older were going to learn. They would work on their farms in the morning and go to school in the afternoon".

In conclusion the missionaries shocked their life since they did so many deeds for the people. Just so they could come to The supreme God and have enteranl life. The missionaries built schools and hospital for the children and adults. So the men and women were all surprise since they did all of this to get them to follow their God. This is how the Missionaries shocked everyone.

The missionaries were able to shock the life of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women. They built churches and sent around evangelists. The missionaries talked about only one God. The white man said that all the villagers’ gods were fake. They wanted all to be convinced there was only one God. The villagers just made fun of this white man. Maybe the missionaries should talk the villagers in to his religion before insulting them.

Obierika went to visit Okonkwo to tell him that the missionaries were in the village of Umuofia. In Umuofia, they built churches. Also they won converts. The missionaries sent men to the surrounding villages. Some people believed that the missionaries wouldn’t last long.

Some men were sent to Mbanta. There were 6 men and one was white. The villagers came out to see what was going on. The white man spoke through an interpreter. The white man talked about a new God, the creator of all men and women.

He also said that the god they worshiped was a false god, a god of wood and stone. He told them that there was only one God. A God that lived high upon everyone. And that when all men died, they went before this one God. He warned them that all evil men were thrown in fire to be burned. But if they worshiped this one only God, they would live in his kingdom.

The missionaries wanted to convince everyone that there was only one god. He told the villagers that they were sent by their great God to ask them all to leave all their false gods. So that way they could believe in one that would save them. The white man said that a real god would not ask them to kill their children. And the one and only God ruled earth, sky and everyone.

The villagers murmured at the sound of their god being called a false. They all laughed at the words of the white man. One person asked “If we leave our gods and follow your god, who will protect us from the anger of our neglected gods and ancestors?” so the white man answered: “Your gods are not alive and cannot do you any harm. They are pieces of wood and stone.” When this was interpreted, the villagers laughed. They said he must be mad and started to go away.

I think that the missionaries really shocked the people. They shocked them by giving their points of view on the villager’s gods. The missionaries were able to convince few people into believing in one god. Maybe they should have talked to the villagers in a way that wouldn’t sound insulting to them. Like without saying their god was a false.

The Missionaris are a very strong religious group in Umoufia. As time went on the Missionaries became bigger. The Missionaries put down Umoufia's gods by saying they were a piece of wood and stone.Umoufia was shocked at how fast the Missionaries grew.I believe thay the Missionaries will soon take over Umoufia.

The Missionaries was able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women. The did it by telling them that their gods was harmless. They said that their gods was just a piece of wood and stone. That their gods was not real. They scared them into believeing in their gods.

The Missionaries preached about there gods. They said there god was the only god. That everyone was brother and sister. When the men die they must face god on Judgement day. They said that god sent them to save them.

They said that there god was the only god. That Umoufia's god could not save them. When they die they must pay for it.The Missionaries asked for a piece of land they could build a Church. They wanted everyone to come on the Seventh day or every Sunday.

The people gave them as much land as they needed inside the evil Forest. They thought that they would say no but they did.Since they said yes, Umoufia thought that they would all be dead within 4 days. They survived past that date.Everyone was shocked.

Okonkwo's oldest son Nwoye left this father and started practing thier religion. He was unhappy and tried to choke the truth out of him. Many people followed. They build a school for kids to learn to read and write.Okonkwo, his friend and his Uncle agreed that they were becoming too strong.IT was too late to fight back now.

In conclusion I believe that missionaries will soon take over Umoufia.Either that or it will be a big war.The missionaries was too strong. They turned too many men, woman and children to their side.

The missionaries were able to make the life of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and also the women. They built churches and sent around evangelists. The missionaries had talked about only one God. The white man said that all the villagers’ gods were fake. They wanted all to be convinced there was only one God. The villagers just made fun of this white man. Maybe the missionaries should talk the villagers in to his religion maikeg bad comments to their beliefs and religions.

The Missionaries preached about there gods.saying tht there god was the only and true god. That everyone was brother and sister. When the men die they must face god on Judgement day. They said that god sent them to save them.

The missionaries also shocked the people of Umoufia was by saying that the gods that they believed in were not alive. They also said that they couldn't do any harm. The quote from the book that reflects on this statement is "True gods lived on high and that all men when they died went before him for judgment". That also means that when you die you will go to the god that you believed in.

The white man said in response "You carve a piece of wood like that one over there. But it is nothing but a piece of wood.So the people were being shocked because whatever they said about there gods. The white man had a more powerful response. And i think thats what cause the people tho think about what religion they wanted to be in.

Well that how the Missionaries shocked the Igbo men and women by changing they religion and tradition, and in a way the missionaries did what they come to do convert the people of Umoufia, it’s a very sad ending of a great clan.all good things must come to a end.which had happened.

In conclusion I believe that missionaries will probably rule or overtake umoufia.which a war or dispute between things might happen. The missionaries was too strong.they have done very much power taken over and controled much of umoufia

The missionaries practiced a separate religion than the Igbo. A missionary is a person who tries to get people to change their religion to Christianity. The missionaries showed up in Umofia unexpected and were disrespected. Many people went over to the missionary’s religion. The missionaries were able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women by converting Igbo men and women to Christianity.

The Igbo men shocked to see many people convert to Christianity. In my opinion I think the Igbo were jealous because people were going to Christianity. The fact that people were converting to Christianity was causing problems in the Umofian tribe. People were getting beat for changing their religion. In the book a women said that “the village has out lawed us”. She said this because the people who believed in the Igbo wanted the Christians out the village.
Another reason the missionaries shocked the non-conforming Igbo was that they couldn’t believe that the missionaries had one god. The Igbo pray to more than one god. The Igbo pray to their gods for crops, health and other things. The missionaries only pray to one god that the Igbo men and women questioned about.

Another reason the missionaries shocked the Igbo is because they set up their church in the evil forest. In the book it said “the Igbo really didn’t want the missionaries in their clan.” Since the Igbo didn’t want the missionaries in their clan, they let them get as much of the Evil forest they wanted. The missionaries set up their house on the land. The Igbo expected the missionaries to die and they didn’t.

One more way the missionaries shocked the Igbo is because the Igbo took the twins out the forest. Normally twins are thrown in the forest to die. The missionaries took the responsibility of raising the twins. The twins also attended the church. People were surprised to see the twins in church.

The last way the missionaries shocked the Umofian tribe is by making Nwoye interested in the religion. Okonkwo was extremely upset that his son was changing his religions. In the book Nwoye said “he wanted to change his mother, brother and sister into Christian.” His father was so disappointed with his son he tried to kill him. That’s why I think he did not want his father to find out.

As you can see the missionaries shocked the Igbo tribe in many ways. The Igbo really didn’t like the missionaries. That’s why I believe the missionaries got beat. I think the Igbo should just accept the different religions. They are not being forced to worship it.

The people of Umofia Took there religion serious. The Missionaries were able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and woman by telling them that the god they worship is nothing but wood and stone.

The white man was insulting the people of Umofia by telling them how there gods was nothing but fakes. They told the people of Umofia that there god wont be able to save them only there god could save them.

All the Missionaries was doin was talkin about there god and tellin them certain things about there god as in what there god can do and what there god cant do.

There was a white man and told them how evil men shall be burned and that they should worship there god.

Everything the Umofia people tried to say about there god the white men always was one step ahead of knowing what to say to the Umofia people.

The white men was able to talk some Umofia people into believing them about there god.I dont understand how some of them just took what they said and started to believe them.

If the White men really wanted more of the Umofia people to believe in there god they shouldnt have insulted them and should have found some other way to tell them about there god.

I believe the Missionaries were able to shock the life style of the traditional non-conforming Igbo men and woman. When they came to Umoufia and started and proceeded to tell them that the gods they worshiped were nothing but wood and stone . They stated that there god was harmless to them. Following that statement they started to say that there god was better then there fake god.

In the story it states that "how can the white man understand our customs when he doesn't even speak our tongue?".They were confused at the fact that another man comes to them and trying to make them not only convert to another god but yet say there god is a fake . Trying to prove to them that his god is the only one that exist . What the white man was stressing to them they had no clue on what he was saying.

The missionaries wanted to convince every one that there god was way better and that there was only one god . The white man told the villagers that they were sent to ask them to leave all there fake gods. So that they could just jump shift and believe in the one.He also stated there was only one god who ruled earth and sky and every thing possible not how they believed that every thing had a different god .

If the Igbo people would have went into a new religion the fear they would have had would of over came them by neglecting the gods they thought they would be punished . When the missionaries the villiegers where came in were shock to see a white man .They thought that white men rode on iron horses and do other things that rich and different people do since they never seen a person of his standers not only that but with his langue

So many people where in shock when they found out that others already converted to Christianity .People began to realy put some thought and start thinking about the change and what the missionaries said .But for a few of them it wasn’t so easy to just let go of there gods that they worshiped for so long .But yet Mr.Brown had fate and was still had a good mind set and kept preaching about his god .

To me Mr.Brown did some pretty good things for the people of Umoufia .For example Mr. Brown had helped them in so many ways. Such as building schools and also hospitals .They seen some type of change children began to learn and the people were token care of when they were sick or hurt .They felt some type of way because there where never really helped they were mostly independent

In conclusion they were just aiming to change there beliefs and giving them some powerful words to be shocked over . So they can think and convert to Christianity like many others .Thy are trying anything so that to set the fact straight saying there god is fake making them feel as if every thing they believed was a lie , nothing and fake .

    Wkend Essay 4 .

Q - How and why were the missionaries able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women?

A - How the missionaries were able to shock the life style of traditional non-conforming Igbo men and women was I think a little wierd . I say that because the villagers were very serious about their religion. They didnt like the missionaires to try and change them to go into their religion. I feel that it was unfair and wrong that the missionaires would even try to do that. The way that the missionaires tried to even try to shock them into going into their religion and stuff was kinda wrong because they just want more people to go into their religion but at the end they dont really care , they just want more people so that the villagers religion cant have I guess so many people in that religion.

Also, the way the missionaires came out and like try to diss the other religion that the villagers believe in was beyond wrong. I understand if your trying to put people into your religion thats all well and good but when you try to diss the other religion, I just feel that you have no respect for anybody and probally that religion is type wack and nothing they believe is like the real deal. I dont know how the missionaires can deal with their selfs daily. Thats just was so rude what the missionaires would do that. Thats so disrespectful .

For example , its like when you disrespect somebodies country . People get offended when you do that because you wouldnt want people talking about your country. Say that my friend Rachael is from Puerto Rico while I'm from Spain. I wouldnt like if I was talking bout Rachaels country because I dont know how her heradity and where shes came from and what she went through and how she lived and vice versa for its my country because thats disrespectful. The same thing for religion because its so madd rude and stuff and its considerative.

Why the missionaires were able to shock the life style traditional non-conforting Igbo men and women is because they thought that by saying rude things to the village people that they wouldnt care about their religion and that they would just go to the missionaires religion. Unlike America, Africans care about their religion. They would probally hurt you if you talk very bad about their religion. They care alot about that religion and when you just bash that religion so you can get people to be in your religion, its just wrong on so many levels like I have stated above.

But, Americans we do care about our religion but not as much as the Africans do. Most people change their religion alot in America. I dont think thats very healthy in a "relationship" because your steady changing religions. Maybe because of personal beliefs but you should pick one and stay with that one so that you dont have to switch religions so much.

So when the missionaires try to shock the lifestyle of the villagers, it took them a while to do that because when you mess with the africans religion or anything really, they dont play that. Africa and America are so different. Sometimes I wished that Americans would treat everything good like the Africans do or value everything because than I think our lifes would be better and stuff. It just ashame how we became and now are now . Just ashame.

In conclusion, I think how the missionaires went about doing what they did was wrong. I still dont know how they live with themselves. I still comend them for trying but how they going about it is all wrong. If they just like told the villagers how the religion is and I guess positive things and not bashing one another, I think it wouldnt been so hard and stuff. This story really minds me how I should really value stuff. I know that part was all off topic, but it really shows how I should enjoy what I have and not so much complain about what I dont have and appreciate what I do have.

I beileve that the the missionarys shocked the igbo men and women by talkin about there god. and what the igbo men and women had beileved. they said that there god was fake and they should not bielive in him.

When the white men came to speak. he disrespected the missionarys god. he said how there god was harmful and that ther god was not real.

The white men compared their god to wood and stone which was very shocking and innsulting. also people were shocked to see others coverting to christainty. I think that everyone thought that people would stick by thier old gods so they were very shocked to see the opposite happen.

I would also be shocked that people converted to christianity. at first people seemed so loyal and commited to there religion but i quess the white men where very convinceing.

I think the igbo men and women where shocked the the white men even came and talked to them about changing there god. the were very shocked about the they were saying.

THe white men were able to make people christain but the ones who were loyal to there religion kept beileveing in the god.

In coclusion, the men and women of Igbo was shocked that the white men talked about there god as being fake and and was harmless.

The missionaries’ shocked the life style of Igbo due to the release they feel from the powerful word of the gospel which had captivated them to become Christian. Even though people wasn’t really fund of it at first but then they became aware of the freedom they can receive.

The men I think the question is referring to men that don’t a title. In the text it says, “That was a source of great sorrow to the leaders of the clan; but many of them believed that the strange faith and the white man’s god would not last. None of his converts was a man whose word was heeded in the assembly of the people. None of them was a man of title. They were mostly the kind of people that were called efulefu, worthless, empty men.” This means the majority of men who became Christian were men who didn’t have anything to lose due to they already didn’t have a title so what could they be scared of. That explains the freedom they received; how and why they became Christian.

I guess the explanation for the large amount of woman converting into Christians is the difference they were being treated by men before the missionaries came into place. Before they came woman was treated like dogs. Men thought woman only existed for making babies, meals, and staying home to take care of them while clean. The missionaries showed the woman how to be happy again. They felt appreciated and relieved they don’t have to worry about getting beat for doing something wrong. In the text it says, “Mr. Kiaga was going to send into the village for his men converts when he saw them coming on their own. Of course they had all heard the bell-man, but they had never in all their lives heard of women being debarred the stream.” This means he cared for the woman’s safely and they were appreciative.

There are different reasons explaining why men and woman converted into Christianity. There’s not only that though. When men began to realize that Christianity was beginning to take over evil thought began to enter. Men who were part of the clan wanted to do harm towards the missionaries because they felt as if they were taking over. The main person who really wishes harm towards them is off course Okonkwo. In the text it says, “Even though it’s not a shocker from Okonkwo, I was shocked at every other man’s attitude. I know I shouldn’t but I am. They just feel that others were betraying ancestry as well as tradition and that made them angry. So their hopes are to run the missionaries out of their village.

This brings me to my conclusion. I feel as if everybody should have their own decisions because it’s their life; but in Nigeria things are way different but everybody has the right to an idea. My prediction is that Christianity will become part of everyone’s life including Okonkwo due to the converting increase hopefully I’m right.

The missionaries always had a differnet religion than the igbo. Missionaries are often known for trying to get people to become a christian.
